James Cameron talks Sanctum

“Avatar” answers this question: what has James Cameron been doing since sinking “Titanic” and walking away with all those Oscars 12 years ago? BFD asked Cameron a new question: what does his 3D breakthrough mean for everybody else?

BFD: You’re producing the 3D film `Sanctum’ and will do the same with the `Fantastic Voyage’ remake being written by Shane Salerno. Is this a deliberate strategy to feed a diet of 3D pictures to further screen counts?

`Sanctum’ was designed to show several things. It’s an R rated picture, an adult drama. There are no monsters or fantasy elements. It’s basically `Deliverance’ in a cave, a pure psychological drama. The goal with that film is to show you don’t have to spend a couple hundred million dollars to make a film in 3D. We‘re making that picture for about $22 million. `Sanctum’ also shows this doesn’t have to be horror, fantasy or action. I want to inspire other filmmakers to do 3D, to keep it alive and expanding. I’m going to make all my features in 3D so in a way, what’s good for 3D is good for me. I’ve tried to create an example with `Avatar’ and I’m trying to create examples with `Sanctum’ and `Fantastic Voyage.’ In a completely different way, I’ll create an example with `Titanic,’ showing that you can go back to an evergreen or comic-book film and convert it to high quality 3D. That’s a completely different process than `Avatar’ or `Sanctum,’ but it will mean more content for 3D screens. Everybody can now see this is not going to fade out. Audiences are embracing it, and seeking it out. We went up from 250 to 510 3D screens in France, just in anticipation of `Avatar.’ And they are selling out.

Johnson, Reynolds follow Statt to CAA
Posted by Ida in Movies, Sanctum on December 5th, 2009 | No Comments

Veteran UTA talent agent reps varied roster

Veteran UTA talent agent Darren Statt will be moving to CAA and taking with him his biggest clients, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds.

The Scottish-born agent, who has been in the UTA talent department for seven years, reps a diverse roster of actors who also include Irish actors Ciaran Hinds and Cillian Murphy; Australian thesp Rhys Wakefield, who just landed a lead role in the James Cameron-produced 3D drama “Sanctum”; Jeremy Davies (“Lost”); “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston; Emmanuelle Chriqui (“Entourage”); and producers Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray of Mayhem Pictures. Statt isn’t Cranston’s primary rep, and the actor is expected to stay at UTA.

Statt’s under contract until year’s end, so it was unclear whether he would ride out his contract or leave sooner.

Statt has agented Johnson since he transitioned from his wrestling persona “the Rock” into action films. He then broadened into adult dramas and family comedies and dropped the Rock, except for a “Saturday Night Live” appearances as “The Rock Obama.” Johnson next stars in the George Tillman-directed CBS drama “Faster.”

Reynolds followed his summer success in “The Proposal” and “Wolverine” by winning the title role in “Green Lantern,” the Martin Campbell-directed film based on the DC Comics character that begins production next year. Reynolds was also the centerpiece of an Allan Loeb-scripted romantic comedy that sold to Working Title in a high-six- against seven-figure deal last week.

Rhys lead in new film
Posted by Ida in Movies, Sanctum on October 24th, 2009 | No Comments

Rhys has been cast as a lead role in in James Camerons newest project, Sanctum. Here’s some snippets of info I found about the film.

Based on true events, producer James Cameron presents this adventure drama concerning a father and son who are trapped in an underwater cave with a team of divers as the group strives to stay alive against all hope. Kokoda’s Alister Grierson directs from a script by Andrew Wight and John Garvin. “

Rogue Pictures has pacted with James Cameron to co-write and produce “James Cameron’s Sanctum,” a live-action drama to be shot next spring in high-definition 3-D reports Variety.

Gary Johnstone will direct the pic revolving around a deep-sea diving team headed by a father and son. When the team heads to uncharted depths, a life-threatening crisis occurs. Cameron is rewriting the script with John Garvin.

Despite the ambitious technology and undersea storyline, the film will be budgeted in the low $20 millions. While Cameron is preparing to direct the lavish 3-D drama “Avatar”, he’ll be actively involved in “Sanctum”.

Sorry for my absent, I will make a post explaining the situation soon… :)

DAGEN Merrill’s Australian film Broken Hill, starring Timothy Hutton and Rhys Wakefield, won the audience choice award on Sunday at the TriMedia Film Festival in Colorado. And seven Australian films have been selected to screen at the influential Pusan International Film Festival. The South Korean event will screen Claire McCarthy’s The Waiting City, Granaz Moussavi’s My Tehran for Sale, Last Ride, Balibo, Jane Campion’s Bright Star and Mary and Max in its world section. The feature film debut from director Rupert Glasson, Coffin Rock, will screen as part of Midnight Passion, the sidebar dedicated to genre films. Heaven knows what South Koreans will make of that diverse lot.
